DES PTO Gator Blast:
Week of August 24-28, 2015

Welcome to Davidsonville Elementary School!

Tomorrow marks the official first day for all 1st-5th graders at Davidsonville Elementary School. Kindergarteners will join us on a staggered basis.
The teachers and classrooms are ready. The staff is prepared. Now all we need are the students (and parent help) to get the year rolling.

Coming Up This Week:
Monday, Aug.24: First Day of School for grades 1-5
Monday & Tuesday, Aug. 24-25: Kindergarten parent conferences
Wednesday-Friday, Aug. 26-28: Kindergarten staggered entrance.
Kindergarten parents should have received letters with conference times and stagger start date. If not, contact the DES Front Office at: 410-222-1655.

A Look Ahead:
Monday, Aug. 31: First day of full-day Kindergarten
Thursday, Sept. 3: Back to School Night for all parents, 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 9: Special Education Meeting, 7-8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria
Friday, Sept 11: Volunteer Orientation, 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria (see the Volunteer meeting notice here)

Here’s The News:

Buses will be rolling once again
The Anne Arundel County school bus schedules are available online. If you haven’t already checked them, visit: http://www.aacps.org. Please be on alert for school-age children moving about your neighborhoods and please brief your bus-rider on proper bus behavior.

Label your belongings
Please remember to write your student’s name on their personal items, including lunchboxes, backpacks, jackets, etc. If items are misplaced, there is a lost and found bin in the cafeteria.

Arrival & Dismissal at DES

  • Official school hours are 9:15 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Please note that students are expected to be in their classrooms by the official start time, so allow them time to locate their rooms, unpack and settle in.
  • Your students should know if they are a bus-rider or a car-rider. The school encourages students to ride the bus if at all possible.
  • If your student will be a car rider, please note that car drop-off and pick-up is in the front of the school, not in the bus loop. Also, the line of sight for exiting cars onto Central Ave. can be tricky. All cars still waiting to enter the parking lot are asked to leave a few car lengths of empty space at the turn in to allow exiting drivers a better view of oncoming traffic.
  • All entry to the school at the end of the day is restricted between 3:25 and 3:40 p.m.
  • For more details on arrival and dismissals, please read the information on the DES PTO website at: http://despto.org/des-info/arrival-dismissal-guidelines/.

Featured Guest at Special Education Meeting, Sept. 9th
All parents are welcome to attend the first meeting of the Special Education Committee on Wednesday, Sept. 9th, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the DES Cafeteria.
The special guest will be Bobbi Pedrick, Director of the AA County Division of Special Education. The committee is excited to feature this guest at the first meeting of the year. For more details on the committee or this event, contact Marygay Cross, Click to send an e-mail.

That’s it for now.
Get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast,
and get ready for another great year!

backtoschoolCome to Back to School Night
DES Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3rd at 6:30. All parents are encouraged to attend. As parents enter the building, they will go directly to their child’s homeroom class. At 6:30 pm, there will be a Principal’s Welcome Message delivered over the video announcements by Mrs. Hofstetter and a PTO meeting conducted over the video announcements by Mrs. Jennifer Beall, PTO President. Two 25 minute classroom sessions will follow: one at 7 p.m. and the other one at 7:30 p.m. (for parents with more than one student). The evening will conclude by 8 p.m.

As this is a parent informational event, parents are asked to refrain from bringing children to Back to School Night. Also, Back to School Night is an opportunity for teachers to relay general classroom information to parents. It is not a time for individual parent/teacher conferences. Due to the large volume of cars,  please be patient when parking on school property and considerate when parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. We look forward to seeing all of our parents at this very important event.

We need YOU now!
The PTO and the students need your help to save some programs in danger of being cancelled due to lack of volunteers. Some committees have only a chairperson, and nobody else to help. Please take another look at the online sign up at:  Sign-up Genius Volunteer form. You can choose multiple committees and roles as needs vary, and some jobs are seasonal. If you’d like to know what the greatest needs are for volunteers, contact PTO Volunteer Coordinator, Beth Kuhl: Click to send an e-mail. Thank you.
