Author’s Week Committee Chair needed
The PTO is asking for a volunteer to help coordinate the annual Author’s Week held in late May. This event allows for authors to come and share their books and stories with students at assemblies. The volunteer would help schedule the visit and handle details. If interested, contact PTO Volunteer Coordinator Beth Kuhl at bethkuhl@comcast.net. Thank you.

JA In a Day
This great program is coming to DES again soon. You may have already heard from Room Parents who are looking for volunteers from each class to help on Feb. 26th. Please consider donating your time to this one-day program that teaches financial literacy concepts such as money management and career opportunities to students of all ages. Volunteers will be trained and provided all materials to make this a valuable and fun day. If you want more details, contact Tammie Wolfe in the front office at: twolfe@aacps.org or contact Carrie Groff at: cagroff@comcast.net.

PTO announces Volunteers of the Quarter
Every quarter the PTO has the honor of choosing a Volunteer of the Quarter and then an overall Volunteer of the Year at the end of the year. DES is a special school with a tremendous amount of parent support.  We are so fortunate to have so many supporters among us.  Behind every great chairperson is an even better committee supporting them.  Together we can accomplish whatever we dream for our children.

For the first quarter, the PTO has chosen Mrs. Carrie Groff as their Volunteer of the Quarter. She has given countless volunteer hours to our school for PTO and classroom events. For the past three years, she has been the chairperson for the very successful Gator Gamble, which has raised over 100K for DES.  Currently, she is serving as our board President. For the second quarter, the PTO has selected Mrs. Jodi Doney as the Volunteer of the Quarter.  Jodi has served on the PTO board as the Secretary and spearheaded the movement to bring a school play to our school this year. She has also organized and started the Spelling Bee and the Spelling Bee Club at DES.

Please join us in thanking these ladies for their service.

Seussical Tickets – Sold Out!
Both shows of Seussical, Jr. are sold out! Unfortunately we cannot accommodate “standing room only” for these performances. Student performers will be utilizing the aisles and it presents safety concerns to have audience members standing around the perimeter. If you are attending, please be reminded that you will need a hard copy ticket to enter so that we can ensure those with tickets get their seats. Each ticket has a unique bar code and date (look in the bottom right hand box/corner); please check carefully to ensure that you attend on the designated night. Again, no standing room will be available; only ticketed attendees may attend. For those of you attending either performance, help us ensure a smooth check-in by:

  • Checking your tickets to make sure you are attending on the correct night and with the correct number of people
  • Bringing hard copies of your ticket(s)
  • Having each person coming into the Theater Doors have one ticket in hand
  • Arrive on time. Theater doors open at 6:40 p.m., arrive as close to this time as possible.

If you are a ticket holder and have tickets to release, e-mail Syndy Kucner at kucnerfamily@hotmail.com to release them manually instead of on the EventBrite site. Cash donation container and cash concessions will be available.

Thank You for all the Cats for Katarina!
The kids at DES have done it again! Thanks to their generous donations, we were able to raise $5,660 towards Katarina’s medical costs. Katarina is a kindergartner at DES that had an accident in December that has left her with many medical issues. A group of friends and neighbors are raising money to remove some of the financial burden from the family. We sold “cats” for Kat to raise money during lunch last week and the effort made by the students was astounding. Some dug into their own piggy banks, some went door to door asking friends for help, some even sold Lemonade to raise money. The top three classes that bought the most cats will be announced this week, as will the winners of the Popsicle party! The kids might even get a surprise message from Kat herself.  Thanks again to everyone who participated. If you would like to contribute to the cause or learn more, please visit the fundraising site established for the family (parents be advised the page contains details you may not feel comfortable sharing with young children):  Click here to support Help with Katarina’s Recovery by Katarina’s Friends

Square 1 Art Fundraiser – Order Deadline is Tuesday, 4/12/16!
This isn’t your typical fundraiser…Parents don’t get excited about fundraisers — but they DO get excited about what their child is learning. That’s what makes Square 1 Art’s fundraising program so exceptional. Our focus on the accomplishments of the student, creates conversations between parent and child, as well as memorable keepsakes family members can’t resist. When all is said and done, the child’s creativity is affirmed, the parents have a lasting memory, and the school raises valuable funds. That’s a win-win partnership. Any questions, please contact Liz Werwieelizabethwerwie@gmail.com or 703-201-3021.

Students can choose to participate in the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program or set personal goals for literacy activities. All reading counts! Students complete a DES Summer Reading Log and submit it to their new homeroom teachers in August to receive kudos and special recognition.
There’s a great website to learn more. See the link below for the log, details, helpful resources for parents, and choice ideas to keep students motivated to read for enjoyment over the summer!

Aloha Day!
Aloha Day is Wednesday, June 15th. It’s an annual celebration at DES to celebrate saying hello to summer break and goodbye to DES (at least for a little while). The SGA will be selling luau/aloha supplies June 13-15th and items are $1 or less. Then join us in wearing your festive aloha items/clothing on June 15th.

Volunteer Awards
The recent Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast event featured many awards to some DES volunteers. The PTO presented the annual Volunteer of the Year award to Carrie Groff, our current PTO President, previous VP of fundraising, and architect of the Gator Gamble event. Our thanks to Carrie for all she does for DES. Also, the two most recent Volunteers of the Quarter were announced: Christina Feindt was named as the third quarter winner – I handle the Gator Blast, the website, and other PTO Communications, so that’s me! The fourth quarter winners were Abby Glenn and Kelly Shamah for all of their efforts toward the super fun and family-focused Gator Gallop event.

Tremendous thanks go out to ALL of our DES volunteers. The students at the Volunteer event had SO very many thanks, and shared so many great memories that the PTO and all of the parents help to make possible. Davidsonville Elementary is certainly a better school thanks to all of us.
