Volunteer of the Month for October
Sheila Norman
Sheila began leading the Green School Club three years ago after co-leading it for one year, and has been running monthly meetings and coordinating activities (i.e., Green Expo, offsite planting, guest speakers) since then. She has helped with projects such as building and installing bluebird houses around the school, introducing composting during lunch, painting rain barrels, and sharing about our impact on the school, community and world. Under her leadership, the Green School Club has also visited a local farm to understand sustainability in action. This year the group has taken on the challenge of repurposing plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless and hope to deliver their first mats in January.

Sheila also works in conjunction with the School Beautification Committee to bring in landscapers to do some serious pruning, cleaning, and maintenance of the outdoor areas around the school, with a special emphasis on the Seeds of Learning Garden. She has been a Room Parent multiple times and has also served as the Chairperson for the Cooking Program for the past 2-3 years. Sheila also assists with Book Fair and other activities whenever possible.

Sheila, husband Patrick, and their daughters Emerson (5th grade) and Mallory (7th grade), live in Davidsonville. The DES PTO would like to thank Sheila for all of her outstanding efforts and all of the time she dedicates towards the students, school, staff, and to the entire community. Valentine’s Day Party schedules
We all LOVE Valentine’s Day at DES! Each class will host a party to celebrate the day. Parents are always welcome to class parties, but no siblings please. Room Parents should have already reached out for party planning and donations. Here’s the schedule:
Kindergarten: 11:30-12:15
1st grade: 1:45-2:30
2nd grade: 2:15-3:00
3rd grade: 2:00-2:45
4th grade: 2:45-3:30
5th grade: 2:45-3:30

Engineering Program opens registration for all grades
We are back with exciting new sessions for the Engineering Program, delving further into the world of engineering. This session is all about cars and energy! The younger kids (K-3rd) will build cars using renewable energy while older kids (3rd-5th) will use basic coding skills to control an automated car to solve missions. This year we have included an option for 3rd graders – they get to pick which session they would like to participate in. Please indicate this on your registration form.

We are happy to report that enrollment of DES girls went from less than 20% to 35% in the fall! We hope this upward trend continues. Sessions are an excellent introduction into coding, programming and all the fun and innovative things that they can create. If your child has never participated in the engineering program, no problem! Our experienced instructors are on hand to help.

Classes start March 14, so sign up as soon as possible. Contact Bunmi Emenanjo at b.emenanjo@gmail.com with any questions.

Send in your Box Tops!
It’s time for the March 1st submission, so please send in your Box Tops for Education labels. The last few years, we have celebrated and said thank you to the children by handing out freezer pops at Field Day. Thanks to the parents, grandparents, neighbors, etc. for sending them in and keeping this program successful at DES. Please keep in mind the following when sending in your box tops:
· Box Tops must include a valid expiration date and must say “Official Box Top” on them
· Your plastic bag or envelope should include the following items:
1. Your child’s teacher name
2. Your child’s full name (first and last)

Thanks again to everyone in advance for your full cooperation. If you have any questions please contact chair Jinna Suggs at: jinnap@yahoo.com.

Martial Arts program is back for grades 3-5
DES and East Coast Martial Arts are teaming up again for the 2019 Martial Arts Enrichment program! ECMA will offer 6 introductory classes at DES for students in grades 3 – 5, after school in March for only $40. All profits will be donated to the DES PTO.  Kids will learn the basics of martial arts and self defense and get to test for their white belt at the end of the program, followed by a party at ECMA Edgewater.  Classes will start immediately after school on March 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28 March.

This is a great way to start your children in a martial arts program without a long term commitment! Kids with experience are also welcome. Children will be receiving registration papers and waivers in gym classes the first week of March or you can contact the Program Chair for forms. Feel free to sign up now! Send in your registration and payment in an envelope marked “Martial Arts Program” or bring to the front office. Contact Chair Mike Schneider for forms or with any questions at 410-693-8967, chayaandmiri@gmail.com. If students need financial assistance, please contact Mrs. Isett  at 410-222-1655, cisett@aacps.org.

Why is the Gator Gamble such a big deal?
We know you are hearing a lot about the Gator Gamble and some may wonder why this one night is so important. You hear requests for Class Baskets, ticket sales, additional donations, and help at the event. It can seem like a lot.

This auction event began as a way to reduce the number of fundraisers needed at DES. It was decided to “gamble” on one big event that would help to cover a huge chunk of the annual budget and allow even more improvements at the school. And so far, it has worked! Far fewer wrapping paper and frozen pizza sales at DES these days.

Your PTO helps to provide SO many things: 5th grade drownproofing, school assemblies, technology improvements (Smart boards and Chromebooks), socials and movie nights, running clubs, a school play, family events, and much more. These events and programs help to make elementary school a very special time to try new things and to make memories. Membership dues and the Gator Gamble are the primary income sources to make it all happen.

So, the Gamble is a once-a-year mega event and takes a lot of work. But, if we all join together to make it happen, the results can be amazing. We would love for you to attend the Gator Gamble on Saturday, March 2nd, and bid on the wonderful items donated by area businesses, individuals, and school staff. Invite friends and family, too (adults only). It’s a really fun night out, it’s a chance to make an impact, and it’s for the kids. Thank you for any and all assistance.

Volunteers of the Month for December
Amanda & Mike Schneider
Amanda began volunteering at DES with I Read You Read and the Gator Gamble four years ago. She has been a Media Mom for two years and is currently the Co-Stage Manager for the school play, Peter Pan Jr. She has been a clerical helper and is frequently a chaperone with field trips and school socials, as well as volunteering to help with class parties and special activities like gingerbread ornaments and Polar Express Day. Amanda lives in Riva with husband (and co-volunteer of the month!) Mike and their children Chaya (3rd grade) and Miriam (1st grade).

Mike has been the Chairman of the DES Martial Arts Enrichment Program for four years. The program has run multiple martial arts sessions every year where they have enabled almost 200 students to try out martial arts. Over that time they have also raised almost $8,000 for the PTO. Like his wife, Mike is also a frequent chaperone, party and special activity helper.

The Davidsonville Elementary School PTO would like to express our appreciation to the Schneiders for their regular volunteer work and ongoing participation in school activities. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Wow… The 80’s were back for a night at the Gator Gamble. The outfits, the music, the laughter, you all really made it awesome! Fundraising should always be this fun! So many fantastic items to bid on, and some really great deals were found.
Thanks go to:

  • A million thanks to all that attended, bid on items, and took part in it all.
  • Co-chairs Melissa Robinson and Lisa Gebbia. It’s a huge amount of work to put on an event that size – and they rocked it!
  • Everyone who volunteered at the event and behind the scenes.
  • Everyone who donated items, sought donations, and the Room Parents who helped put together the Class Baskets.
  • The school staff for your support and donation of your time.
  • The area businesses who sponsored the Gamble.

Sights we saw: The Top Gun crew was in the house, the girls from Heathers were there with croquet mallets, Alpha Beta ran the prize wheel, Carl the groundskeeper from Caddyshack was roaming around, and lots of big hair, punk rock, legwarmers, raised collars, shoulder pads, and zebra-print were all around. Thanks for the memories everyone!

Turn in those Book-It calendars this week
It’s time to turn in completed February Book It calendars! In case you misplaced your copy, the Feb. calendar is attached. The March calendar is also attached for you to have your child log his or her reading this month. Book-It calendars are available on the PTO website (despto.org). Children that participate for the entire program (Oct.-March) will be invited to a Kona Ice party at the end of the school year!

AmazonSmile program really works!
We just wanted to let everyone know that your usage of the AmazonSmile shopping link was tremendous at the end of last year. The Davidsonville Elementary School PTO earned over $220 for activity between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31st. Thanks to all who click that link at the bottom of every Gator Blast before shopping at Amazon, or visit the despto.org website for the link on the right of the main page. We just wanted to say “Thanks” and keep up the great work!

The DES PTO has selected Stephanie Brooks and Jill Adams as Volunteers of the Month for February. The school yearbook is quite an ongoing project and these two special DES volunteers have taken on the task for a second year now, as well as jumping in to help all over the place. The PTO thanks them for their dedication to the students and to Davidsonville Elementary School. We asked them to write a little bit about themselves, so let’s get to know them:

Stephanie Brooks
My husband Andy and I have lived in Davidsonville for 8 years with our two daughters Greta (6th grade) and Olivia (1st grade). I started volunteering at DES when my oldest was in Kindergarten by helping with the teacher luncheon committee. I have been class mom for the past 6 years. You can find me helping at most school functions, such as parties, field trips, guest reader, Polar Express, Field Day, and any other school function they may have. The last two years, Jill and I have been the co-chairs for the yearbook. And last year, I saw they were looking for substitute teachers, so I have added that to my list. I love being involved at the school, getting to know so many of the kids, and helping where it is needed.

Jill Adams
I grew up in Davidsonville and attended Davidsonville Elementary myself as a child.  My husband John and I have lived in Davidsonville for 16 years together. We have three children, Ryleigh (12), Hailey (9) and Johnny (6).
I love being able to help out at the school in any way that I can.  I am always willing to go on a field trip, help with room parent duties and copy for teachers.  For the last two years, I have co-chaired the school yearbook.  I really enjoy being able to put together memories of our wonderful school!

Please lend your support!
Join us at the county budget hearing Thursday
You’ve seen details in recent Blasts about the upcoming County Budget hearings. Your PTO will be sending a representative, and a group of supportive DES parents to tomorrow’s event to advocate for more teachers and smaller class sizes in the AA County budget for fiscal year 2020.

DES is potentially losing a teacher position next year, which would increase class sizes (primarily for next year’s 4th graders), make us say goodbye to one of our teachers, and is not what anyone wants to happen. The budget proposals so far include requests for additional teachers countywide, and we want to make sure the County Council knows how important this issue is to us at DES, and ensure that funding for the additional positions is included in the final budget.

We are asking DES parents to join us tomorrow night, at 7:00 pm at the Arundel Center (info. below). If you’d like to speak at the hearing, sign-ups begin at 6 pm.  You don’t have to speak, but we’d love to have your presence. This is the time to stand up about issues that matter to you. If you can’t make it tomorrow, there’s another hearing on Monday at North County HS. Any questions? Contact PTO President Carrie Groff at cagroff@comcast.netNote: there will also be discussion on other budget issues at these events.

Second county budget hearing Monday
A reminder that the second of two public hearings on the proposed AA County budget will be held on Monday evening at North County High School. This information is shared in hopes that many DES parents will get involved in the budget process and stay informed. Thanks to those who attended last week’s hearing. The budget proposals so far include requests for additional teachers countywide, and we want to make sure the County Council knows how important this issue is to us at DES, and ensure that funding for the additional positions is included in the final budget.
Monday, May 13, 2019 – 7:00-11:00 pm
North County High School, 10 East 1st Ave Glen Burnie, MD

Happy Almost Friday!

We just wanted to share a couple of things with you all.

 1. If you are attending Muffins for Moms tomorrow morning at 8:15, please know that we’ve had an overwhelming response for this event and parking may be a bit of a complication.

The school asks that you please try to NOT park in the teacher spots in the front lot. It would be unfortunate for our teaching staff to be unable to find parking, or have to park on the main road (especially during Teacher Appreciation Week). So, if you’re coming, think of carpooling, or parking on the main road. Thanks for your help with this.

2. The County Budget Hearing is tonight and the PTO has only heard from a handful of you that are planning to attend. We are really hoping that more DES families will show up to represent the school, present opinions on class sizes and staffing, and to encourage the County Council to approve a budget that would allow for the recommended increase in teachers for Anne Arundel County. You can find more details in the last few editions of the Gator Blast and links to online information as well.

We would love to have you there tonight at 7:00 pm to stand with the DES PTO! Thank you.

In Recognition:
Volunteer of the Month for April
Rebecca Brunelle
The DES PTO is pleased to announce that Rebecca Brunelle has been selected as the Volunteer of the Month for April, 2019. We asked her for a brief bio of herself, so in her own words:

“We were new to DES last year and I was overwhelmed with the number of volunteer opportunities. I love the level of parent involvement and staff support. Last year, I participated in the I Read, You Read Program. For the past two years, I’ve volunteered on the Social Committee, helping with the Fall Social, Muffins with Mom, and Donuts with Dad. I helped manage 3rd graders for last year’s play Madagascar Jr. and this year took on a more active role as co-stage manager for Peter Pan Jr. I really enjoyed that experience. Finally, I volunteer for the fall and spring Book Fairs. This year, I became a chairperson and will be taking over the event side of things next year as my mentor Melissa Allen says good-bye to DES.

I live in Riva/Annapolis Landing (BEST neighborhood ever!) with my husband, Jon and twin 9 year-old boys Aden and Alex. When I’m not volunteering, I enjoy walking with friends (Hi Lisa!) and spending time with my family. Sadly, next year is our last at DES, I look forward to making it a memorable one!”

The DES PTO salutes the fantastic volunteer spirit you have Rebecca! Thanks for jumping in all over the place and helping to make DES more special every day.

Volunteer of the Month for May
Katie Epperly
The DES PTO is pleased to announce the selection of Katie Epperly as Volunteer of the Month for May. Katie may be new at DES, but she jumped in the deep end this year, and we are so thankful. Here’s some background on Katie.

“My husband Tim and I moved to Davidsonville last summer, but have been local for many years so it was an easy transition for our kids as they had many friends within the schools. I have two boys, Jackson (8th grade) and Connor (5th grade). I like to go on as many field trips as possible and help out in the school whenever possible. I have enjoyed participating in the classroom as a guest reader and volunteering for in-school functions like Donuts for Dads, the Ice Cream Social, Movie Night and Sandy Point.  I also helped with the Gator Gallop and I organized the Fall and Spring Socials. I will really miss Davidsonville Elementary and everyone we met there. Hope to see you all at Central Middle!” Thanks a million for all your time & help Katie and best of luck to you and your family.

The event will feature an ono (tasty) breakfast buffet and student mahalo (thank you) presentations. We have closed the RSVP link. If you have questions, contact Mrs. Appel at DES. We look forward to seeing, and thanking, all of you there.

Join the Gators for Life team at Relay for Life event Friday
A celebration of life dedicated to current and former cancer patients, their families and friends, The Relay for Life raises money for the American Cancer Society research, programs, and services, while raising awareness.

Our “DES Gators for Life” team is looking forward to teaming up on Friday evening for the Relay for Life event at South River High School beginning at 6 pm. Our team will be sponsoring a bounce house from 6-10 pm. Our DES Gator will be on the scene for the “Mascot Mingle” between 7 and 8pm. Stop by – stay for a few laps or stay for a few hours! You do not need to register for the event, just show up. Come visit after your sports practice or dinner! Can’t come? You can still help: light a luminaria and/or offer a donation.  Visit this link to donate online.

On Friday night, Luminaria bags will line the track, representing a person who has been touched by cancer. With a donation of $10, the name of the individual you designate will be placed on a Luminaria bag to be lit during the ceremony around 9:30 pm. You do not need to be present or be a participant for your Luminaria to be included.

If you would like to purchase a luminaria in advance, send $10 cash donation to DES, Attention: “S. Levery, LUMINARIA” to the school office on Thursday. A white bag will be sent home for you and your family to decorate and return to Mrs. Levery by Friday afternoon (or bring the bag to our team table on Friday night). If you send a donation on Friday morning, your student can decorate the bag at school and return it to Mrs. Levery the same day. Luminaria bags can also be purchased up until 9 pm at the event.

You can show your support in the fight against cancer by attending the Relay for Life event at SRHS. Thank you.

Guest author says “Thank You” to DES!
Author Rachelle Burk visited DES last week and had great reviews! She wanted to thank all of the students for being so much fun and make sure that everyone knew that they could still order the books if they really fell in love with them. Books are available on Amazon.com, and if you visit using the AmazonSmile link here, you can even earn funds for the DES PTO while ordering! See the flier for titles.

Reminders:

School Supply ordering still available
Order next year’s school supplies now and save SO much time! Select your grades, make the order, and your student’s supplies will be waiting on desks when they meet the teacher before next school year starts! Teachers also need items like tissues, hand sanitizer, and more. Each grade has an optional list so you can purchase those items as well if desired. Ordering has been extended through the end of June.

Hot off the Presses!
The June edition of The Gator Gazette is here!
The staff of the DES Newspaper club has been writing, reporting, and toiling away to create the final issue for this school year. They offer lots of information about summer break, tips for 5th graders leaving DES, and a whole bunch of fun included for all! The PTO would like to say a big thank you to to the whole Gazette staff and club chair Cathy Manofsky for all of their hard work this year. You can read it online here, or download the file.

Gators are year-round readers
Once again DES has put together a Summer Reading Challenge website for parents and students. The site has links to the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge and lots of ideas for customizing a plan for summer reading. Students’ participation in a program is optional, but it can keep reading fun all summer long. Look for more summer reading info to come home with your students. Here’s the link to the site

In Recognition:
Volunteer of the Month for June
Fiona Goodwin
The DES PTO announces that Fiona Goodwin has been named Volunteer of the Month for June, 2019. Fiona has volunteered for years at DES in varying roles. She has put a lot of time into the Sea Perch program for 5th graders, even when she didn’t currently have a student in the program. Fiona comments that she wanted to empower young girls to become engineers like herself and to lead them to love science and math. Fiona and her husband Iain live in Davidsonville with their daughters, including DES 5th grader Charley. The Goodwin family is very involved with the Davidsonville Athletic Association (DAA) and joins in wherever help is needed. The entire community is thankful for the Goodwins.

The family is currently dealing with a deep personal loss and so many people at DES are sending them the most sincere wishes for healing. See below for information on a memorial event this week.

Get your Lost & Found items NOW
End of the school year and the Lost & Found is overflowing again! So many jackets, lunchboxes (?) and water bottles. We snapped photos for you all to get a look, but it can hardly do justice to the number of items. If you’d like to take a look this week, come to the school and let the office know. Chances are good that most of these items will be donated after the school year ends. It’s a valuable lesson to write your students’ name in and on their items next year!

Volunteer Awards – Volunteer of the Year is Melissa Robinson
The Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast event last week featured several recognitions for some DES volunteers. The PTO presented the annual Volunteer of the Year award to Melissa Robinson, who has served as the PTO Fundraising Chairperson for the past 3 years at DES. She has taken on many roles here, handling the Social Committee, field trips, classroom help, and PTO functions galore! The Gator Gamble has benefitted from hundreds, if not thousands, of her hours over the past 3 years. DES cannot thank you enough Melissa for all that you’ve done. Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Year for 2018/2019!

A big thanks to ALL of our DES volunteers. The students at the Volunteer event had so very many thanks and shared so many great memories that the PTO and all of the parents help to make possible. Thanks to all of the students and staff, especially Mrs. Appel, who helped to coordinate this wonderful event for volunteers.
