Arrival & Dismissal at DES
Official school hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. Please note that students are expected to be in their classrooms by the official start time, so allow them time to get to their rooms, unpack, and settle in. School doors open at 9:15 a.m., please do not drop students off earlier.

Don’t worry if your student is new to the school, there will be plenty of staff in the hallways helping everyone to find where they need to go.

Your students should know if they are going to be a bus-rider, a car-rider, or going to SACC (school age child care program).

If your student will be a car rider, please note that drop-off and pick-up is in the front of the school, not in the bus loop. Please follow all signs posted concerning entering and exiting the lot. The empty space at the turn in allows exiting drivers a better view of oncoming traffic. You are asked to NOT park in the lot for pick up and do not enter the school – please wait in the car line. School staff coordinates the release of students at the end of the day, so please be patient while you wait.

Show your Gator Pride
Gator Gear is here!  Please place your order online by September 20th.  All paper orders must be received by the office no later than September 17th.  We will have a booth set up at Back to School night for magnets, water bottles and apparel samples on September 12th.  We accept cash, check or credit card and you can order online here, or send in the order form. Buses will be rolling once again
AACPS has asked that bus riders arrive at their bus stops around 10 minutes early for the first week. This allows for fluctuations in timing that are bound to happen. Please be on alert for school-age children moving about your neighborhoods and please brief your bus-rider on proper bus behavior. If you need to review yourself, check pages 6 & 7 in the AACPS Parent Handbook that came home in your student’s folder you got at Sneak A Peek.

Label ALL of your belongings
Please remember to write your student’s name on their personal items, including lunchboxes, backpacks, jackets, water bottles, etc.
You would not believe the number of items that end up in the Lost & Found. If items are misplaced, there is a lost and found rack in the cafeteria. These items will eventually be donated as they pile up, so check for your students belongings in a timely manner.

Applications for free & reduced price meals
The Anne Arundel County School Board has placed applications for free and reduced price meals online for easy access. If you are interested in applying, or to find out if you may qualify, visit: http://aacpsschools.org/nutrition. School lunch cost is $2.75 for elementary students. You can also view school lunch menus at this link.

We are looking forward to another great year at DES!

There will be a brief welcome over the school’s video broadcast system by the Principal and the PTO. Then your teacher will fill you in on classroom matters and procedures. There will be two 20-minute sessions for parents with more than one classroom to visit. Please do not bring children with you to this event. And remember that this is an opportunity for teachers to relay general classroom information to parents. It is not a time for individual parent/teacher conferences. We hope to see ALL parents there.
Come & visit the PTO Table in the main hall to meet officers of the PTO Board, ask questions, drop off your membership forms, or just to say “Hi.” Gator Gear will be for sale too!
Parking at Back to School Night:
Due to the large volume of cars expected, please be patient when parking on school property and considerate when parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. There is parking available on both sides of the school. Consider carpooling with your neighbors.

This is a great way to start your children in a martial arts program without a long term commitment! Kids with experience are also welcome. Children will get a short introduction to the program in their gym classes starting on Sept. 17. You can sign up online now by visiting this link. Fall Engineering Program registration opens for all grades
We are back this fall with an exciting new Engineering Program and we are taking things to the next level! Younger kids (K-3rd) will get to program the popular Dash and Dot robots to sing and dance and even play basketball! Older students (3rd-5th) will use the Raspberry Pi and Piper computer to become immersed in the Minecraft world of “Piperverse!” If your kid loves Minecraft, they will love this one. This year we have included an option for 3rd graders – they get to pick which session they would like to participate in. Please indicate this on your registration form.

We would like to encourage DES girls to participate. In the past couple of years, enrollment of girls has been less than 20%. These sessions are an excellent introduction to coding, programming and all the fun things they can create. If your child has never participated, no problem! Our experienced instructors are on-hand to help. Classes start Oct. 4 and are held Thursdays before school for 10 weeks. Costs start at $159, check the flier for info. on registering for spring sessions also. Sign up soon. Contact Bunmi Emenanjo at b.emenanjo@gmail.com with any questions.

Green School Club seeking plastic bags
Did you know that Anne Arundel County no longer accepts plastic grocery bags in their recycling program? While many local grocery stores accept used bags for recycling, the Green School Club is collecting bags for a project. This year, our club is collecting (clean) plastic grocery bags which the kids will transform into durable sleeping mats to be donated to area churches and shelters for the homeless.  It takes about 700 bags to make just one sleeping mat, so bring them, lots of them! Donations accepted on Club meeting days, the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month, before school.

Custodial Appreciation Day
Tuesday, Oct. 2 is National Custodial Worker Day and we want to recognize our wonderful group at DES. The PTO is doing something for them, but all DES families are invited to offer your own thanks for all that they do for the school. The front office will accept your kind wishes or gifts if you want to send in anything. Or, just remind your students to offer their thanks throughout the day (and every day).

Did you join the PTO this year? One last chance to help
We are now putting the Student Directory together and we want to offer families one last chance to become members of the DES PTO this year. We find that we are short of our budget goal for the year and could really use a boost by having 30-40 new members sign up now.

Membership dues help to pay for SO many great programs at the school: Assemblies, new technology, school improvements, movie nights, family events, and a lot more. And remember, only members will receive a copy of the Directory. So, if you didn’t make the deadline and would like to show your support, you can join online right now using PayPal or you can send in a form (attached below) with payment. And to all the families who have joined this year, we truly appreciate it. Thank you.

** SAVE THE DATE **
Date change for Gator Gamble Fundraiser
Saturday, March 2, 2019 is the new date for the super-huge, super-fun Gator Gamble Auction event. Due to some scheduling conflicts, we had to pick a new date for this mega night. It may seem like a long way off, but get it on your calendars now! One more totally tubular night to party 80’s style – it’s gonna be most excellent! Stay tuned over the next several months for much more information coming your way.

Pretty please – with a cherry on top?
We need a few more Ice Cream Scoopers!

Green School Club wants your help
DES Green School Club seeks volunteers to help with making PLARN. This is a super simple job that involves folding and cutting plastic bags into lengths that are then tied together to create plarn. We have had tremendous success with collecting plastic grocery bags (thank you!) and want to keep the momentum going. But, in order to do that, we need HELPERS. Instructions and demonstrations are available for kids and adults (some even find it therapeutic).  If you’d like to help out with turning plarn into sleeping mats, we could use some volunteers to crochet as well… again it’s super simple and instructions and demonstrations are available. Can you help with making PLARN? This is a super simple job that involves folding and cutting plastic bags into lengths that are then tied together to create plarn.  We have had tremendous success with collecting plastic grocery bags and want to keep the momentum going. In order to that we need HELPERS. Instructions and demonstrations are available for kids and adults (some even find it therapeutic). If you’d like to help out with turning plarn into sleeping mats, we could use some volunteers to crochet as well… again it’s super simple and instructions and demonstrations are available. Here’s the News:

Polar Express Day
Friday is Polar Express Day at DES for all students! Many classrooms have chosen to watch a holiday-themed movie of their choice on this day. And the PTO will provide chocolate milk (or lemonade as a limited option) and a snack of oreo cookies to each student. If your child has an allergy, you can send in another snack option or mention it to the teacher. The day offers a chance for everyone to get in the holiday spirit together before school break.

Please don’t park in staff parking spots
We’d like to ask everyone who uses the school parking lot at any time to please leave the two spots for the Principals vacant for all school events. If you haven’t noticed, one of our two Principals tries to attend each and every school function at some point. And as they often have off-site meetings or other obligations, they need to have quick and easy access to the school when they return. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Last chance for Gift Cards-Order by Tuesday
If you need gift cards for holiday giving, there’s still time to send in an order for Gator Green Scrip Gift Cards. You pay face value for every card, and the PTO earns a small percentage from each purchase. There are hundreds of retailers available–Amazon, iTunes, Starbucks, grocery stores, movie theaters, and many more! In order to ensure delivery by this Friday, you must turn in your order by Tuesday morning. All checks are payable to DES PTO. You can find more info. on the order form and information page attached below. Thanks to all who have sent in orders already.

Thanks to all for Holiday Shoppe fun!
The PTO would like to extend its deepest appreciation to all who volunteered for the DES Holiday Shoppe last week. It was an amazing night! Thanks to all of our special elves, and busy workers, as well as our food servers, bake sale volunteers and all the vendors who came out. A special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Wyatt who helped to make sure Santa showed up for the event. We had over 250 kids shop for their holiday gifts! Thanks also to all who took part in the raffles for vendor gits. Winners will be contacted soon, if you haven’t heard already.
