Volunteer of the Month for March
Greg Eggleston
The PTO has selected DES parent volunteer Greg Eggleston as the Volunteer of the Month for March. Greg handcrafted our fabulous prize wheel that we used for the Gator Gamble this year! In addition, he was our go-to-guy to create the beautiful sets for the last three years of DES plays (Seussical, Alice, and Madagascar). He also has worked on the Course Map and Race Day Pace for the Gator Gallop event, helped create the carnival games at DAA’s Gator Day and the scoreboard for their Gator summer Swim Team. He’s an all-around handy guy to get help from in this community.

Greg and his wife Shannon have two children at DES – Emma who is in 3rd grade and Davis who is in 5th grade. Greg works as a US Navy Flight Test Engineer.

Thank you for all of your time and efforts that you put into our school and students Greg!

Revised school budget has been announced
We need your voice!
Plan to attend a Public Budget Hearing May 10th or May 14th
It seems the news is not great for the proposed budget requested for 2019 by AACPS. Changes have now been proposed by County Executive Steve Schuh that drastically alter many of the goals that had been put forward by the School Board and Superintendent Arlotto. They had asked for more teachers to reduce class sizes, more counselors, more special education teachers, and more projects and personnel just to keep up. As an example of the revisions, AACPS had asked for funding for 106 additional teaching positions to help with higher enrollment. The response from Schuh funded zero of these positions. Read the impact statement for yourself to see the original requests, and the adjustments from Schuh. It is attached below.

If this concerns you, disappoints you, or leaves you with questions, we urge you to attend one of the upcoming community hearings with the County Council as they move forward with the approval process. The Council holds the power to add funding back into the budget, or they could approve it as it stands. This may be your ONLY chance to let them know how you feel. DES would love to have a large group of parents attend and speak out. We especially urge you to go to the North County High School event on Monday, May 14th at 7 pm as there is more space at that venue.

The County Council will conduct hearings on the following dates:
7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at the Arundel Center, 44 Calvert Street, Annapolis.
7 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2018, at North County H.S., 10 E. First Avenue, Glen Burnie.
Those wishing to speak can sign up beginning at 6 p.m. Speakers will be allotted two minutes each. The Council will take input from the hearings and other information it gathers before adopting its FY2019 operating and capital budgets no later than June 15th.

If you cannot attend, please consider calling or e-mailing members of the County Council. Visit this page for their contact information. For more info. on the entire budget process, visit this link.
