Come see this wonderful production by Davidsonville Elementary School performers! Although there is no cost for this performance, we ask that you consider making a donation at the show. Proceeds will go to Relay for Life/American Cancer Society and the Forever Fierce Foundation (cash is welcome or make checks payable to the American Cancer Society). All tickets are General Admission, unassigned seating. Be sure to bring your printed ticket with you as it is required for admission. Not having your printed tickets seriously slows down admission & seating. We wish all of our performers the very best and congratulate you all on your hard work.

Tennis program returns this April
Tennis sessions at DES are ready to begin on April 13th for ages 7 and up, and we’d love to get everyone registered prior to Spring Break. Kid-friendly instructors will help your child learn all about this great outdoor sport! The classes will be held on Fridays after school, from 3:55-4:55. Reminder: Gator Gallop Running Club for grades 3-5
If you have a 3rd-5th grader who is interested in training for the Gator Gallop 5K on May 12, sign them up for the Gator Gallop Running Club!  We will be training on Mondays and Thursdays after school starting March 22. We will encourage good habits, good form, and having fun! Please see the attached flier for all the details, and send the form and snack fee back with your child to the attention of “Gator Gallop Running Club.”

Reminder: Cooking Class now registering
Teach your children about healthy eating, nutrition and cooking in this 8 week session of Deliciously Nutritious Food Adventurers. Meeting on Thursdays after school (3:55 to 5:15), the class is open to all grade levels and will begin March 1st. Class costs $150, checks made out to DES PTO. Reminder: Engineering Club is back for Spring
All grade levels are welcome to this 10 week group, meeting on Thursdays before school (8:15-9:15) beginning March 15. Registration deadline is March 9th. Younger kids will be introduced to coding using Scratch and older kids will move up to a more advanced level of programming with Scratch Advanced. If you did not participate in the fall, no problem! *Scholarships may be available upon request. Language camps offered by AACPS
Still making summer plans? ​There are two great opportunities for students to learn about languages and culture hosted by AACPS and the Office of World & Classical Languages. The first will be held at Arlington Echo between June 25-29th for students in grades 1-5 and focuses on Spanish language. The second will be held between July 16-26th at Old Mill Middle School North and is for grades 4-6. This course offers students the chance to choose a focus on either Spanish, French, Italian, or Chinese language and culture. (Note grade levels indicate the grade for next school year.) Please see the fliers for additional details and the registration forms for each program.

Frostbite 5K Fundraiser at SRHS
The first annual Frostbite 5K is a community event with the proceeds benefiting Sneakers for Senegal and the SRHS Prom Breakfast. Registration is now open for the race on March 17th. Visit the online link to register. Early bird deadline ends March 1st, so sign up today.

Spring forward with us as we roll into the next session of Engineering Club! All grade levels are welcome to this 10 week group, meeting on Thursdays before school (8:15-9:15) beginning March 15. We will be continue to build on some of the skills learned in the fall and introduce new skills. Save the Date – Gator Gallop 5K / 1 Mile / Fun Run on May 12th
The Gator Gallop is a fun run benefitting Davidsonville Elementary School and is open to everyone.  Please join us on Saturday, May 12th, at DAA Park for the 5K (8:00 am), 1 Mile (9:00 am for the kids) or the 100 yard gallop (just after the mile, for 2-11 year olds). It’s a great family event with post-race refreshments, prizes and even a Mascot chase for some added DES fun. You can register online at: http://bit.ly/2mqv3WV.

Order your DES Yearbook for this school year. In case you still haven’t gotten around to it, time is running out as ordering ends on March 4th. The cost is $18 for a non-personalized book. Book-It Calendars are available online
It seems the monthly Book-It Calendar for February was missed by many of you, so we wanted to make sure everyone can get what they need. You can find all of the monthly calendars on the DES PTO website at this link: http://despto.org/programs-clubs/pto-programs/reading-incentive-program/. Print out what you need and remember to send them in with your students after tracking your nightly reading. There will be no calendars after the month of March. The DES PTO Board meets monthly and hosts three general membership meetings each school year. We understand many people are busy and may not be able to attend. So, we’d like to let you know what is going on with a meeting summary from the PTO President. If you ever have any questions, comments, ideas, or suggestions, e-mail them to any PTO Board member, attend a meeting, or drop a note in the PTO Suggestion box on the front table at school. House Bill regarding school calendar hearing Feb. 22
We are passing along information that may be of interest to some families. Maryland schools are now restricted by the executive order regarding start and end dates. HB0679 is currently under discussion to allow an exception for some school districts. If you would like to read the bill, testify at the hearing, or just learn more, see the document attached.

Georgetown Basketball Game – 2 free tickets opportunity
The last game of the 2017-18 Georgetown Basketball Achievement Program, for school children in 8th grade and below, will be Saturday, February 24th at 12 pm when the Hoyas host Providence at Capital One Arena. This program rewards students with two (2) free tickets to the game. We just got this information folks, sorry about the missed dates.

Wow – That Gator Gamble was a FUN night!
The Gator Gamble event on Saturday night was a huge success! All of those items to bid on, the live band, the crowd, and those costumes – it’s hard to describe in words. Suffice to say that it was indeed a fun fundraiser. We absolutely couldn’t do it without the entire DES community joining together for every aspect of such a huge undertaking. So THANK YOU to all of you for helping to create a memorable event. The parents, the businesses, the teachers and staff all made this happen. And our many thanks to the hard-working members of the Gator Gamble Committee for the many months of effort they put into making this event come to life. Long live the 1980’s!

Once again, here is the schedule for class Valentine’s parties on February 14. Your room parent should be in touch with you to organize donations and volunteers for your student’s party. Parking may be an issue, so plan ahead and if you have a later party time, plan on having your car out of the bus lot prior to the arrival of buses.

Volunteer of the Month for December

Heather Malcomson
Heather was chosen as DES Volunteer of the Month for December! Heather is the chairperson for the Media Helpers Committee and coordinates Student Picture Day.  Additionally, she also co-chairs the Mighty Milers running club. You will also find Heather helping out with the 1st grade book closet, serving as guest reader, and chaperoning many field trips. Heather has also volunteered with Teacher Appreciation Week in the past.

Heather works part-time as a librarian at Calvert Library.  Aside from books, she loves to boat, hike, and travel with her husband Chuck and kids Charlotte (4th grade), and Weston (1st grade).

Thanks for all that you do for the students and staff Heather! You are awesome.

STEM Expo at Central Middle School Feb. 22
Everyone is invited to attend a fun and educational night at the STEM Expo hosted by Central Middle School. This event is set for Thursday, Feb. 22nd, from 5:30-7:30 pm at CMS. This annual event has been growing each year and offers all types of activities and interesting displays for people of all ages. From gardening to robotics, there’s a lot to see. Guests are asked to donate any old or unused crayons to donate at the door for the Crayon Initiative, you can win a prize for donating.

DAA Spring Soccer Registration Open
Spring is just around the corner and DAA Spring Soccer is open for registration. Youth development  for birth year 2011 and younger and County Soccer (birth year 2010 and older). Please register early to avoid being wait listed or having to pay late fees (start 22nd Feb). Youth development will play on Friday nights. Save the Date for the 2018 Riva 5K
Saturday, April 28th at 9 am, the Riva 5K Run & Walk will be held in the neighborhoods of Berkshire, Annapolis Landing, and Waterford. A fun event for all, proceeds benefit the Annapolis Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center. For details, check the flier.

Parents can explore Camps, Qualify for discounts at Camp Fair
Families can explore summer camps and activities and sign up for programs at discounted rates during two Chesapeake Family LIFE Camp Fairs.
The Annapolis Camp Fair will be Saturday, March 4, 2017, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Annapolis Area Christian School Campus, 716 Bestgate Rd, Annapolis 21401. The Camp Fair will be in the gymnasium. The Bowie Camp Fair will be Saturday, March 25, 2017, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the City of Bowie Gymnasium, 4100 Northview Dr, Bowie 20716.
Chesapeake Family Life Camp Fairs are free for parents and children to attend. Parents are encouraged to pre-register to receive a list of special discounts available when they register for a summer program at Camp Fair. Last Chance for tickets…
Are you ready??! Tickets are selling out quickly for the Gator Gamble event set for this Saturday, February 10th, starting at 6:30 pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. There’s still a limited number of tickets available, but you’ll have to act quickly. So, fill out the ticket order form attached and send it in ASAP!

Thanks to all of you for the awesome Class Baskets! And the teacher donations up for auction are truly amazing. Hundreds of great items will be up for auction. So whether you’re looking for lawn service, hotel and dining options, or a trip to Disney or Costa Rica — there’s something for everyone at the Gator Gamble!

80’s tribute band, The Reagan Years, will take us all back in time for the night. Wear your best 80’s outfit, and you might get picked as the winner of the costume contest. There will also be raffles, and a 50/50 winner too. Don’t forget the Prize Wheel with all kinds of items you can take home with you. Enjoy food, drinks, music, friends, and much more. It’s a fun night for a great cause.

Congratulations to all of the winners of the weekly prize-drawings for ticket holders. The parents won raffle tickets, and their students won a mega-80’s prize! We will pick another winner on Friday, so get your order forms in now.

Reminder: Presentation on Dyslexia at DES this Tuesday
Please join us at DES on Tuesday, Feb. 6th at 9:30 am for Dyslexia: Questions and Answers presented by Decoding Dyslexia Anne Arundel County and the DES Reading Specialists. The presentation will cover dyslexia warning signs, types of interventions, and information from the Maryland State Department of Education on dyslexia. Younger children are welcome, but childcare is not provided. There is also an upcoming community event you are invited to join. Decoding Dyslexia Maryland for Dyslexia Advocacy Day will be held on February 8th in Annapolis, see attached information.

This year’s Geo Bee came to a close Friday morning with a fabulous showing of our 4th grade contestants who participated in the 2018 National Geographic Bee. Owen Hurson, Brody McConville, Garrett McCoy, Carly Reed and Matthew Robinson were given some really tough questions that even had the audience stumped. They all did a great job!  We commend them for putting in the time to learn more geography and participate in the Geo Bee competition. Congratulations to Owen Hurson – our 2018 DES Geo Bee champion!

Calling all Lady Gator Lacrosse players!!
Gator Girls’ Lacrosse registration is OPEN!  We’d love to have your daughter join us for a fun season of lacrosse this spring!  Please go to the Davidsonville Athletic Association website to register at www.daagators.org.  We have openings for elementary schoolers in our Middie division (5th- 6th graders), Pee Wee division (3rd -4th graders) and in our Sticklettes program (K, 1st and 2nd graders). The season opens for Middies and PeeWees in early March with evaluations at the end of February.
