Science & Engineering Fair

Held in the Spring each year, the annual DES Innovators of Science & Engineering Challenge features students in Grades 3-5.

The projects this year can be submitted digitally (see the template here), or presentations can be brought to school. Projects are judged by volunteer guest judges.

  • Science projects must follow the scientific method and will be judged according to each step you take.  Take a close look at the Science Research Project Evaluation Form so you will not miss any critical steps like data, graphs, etc.  Your experiment should propose a question and test a hypothesis – it is not a model or demonstration.  A great resource is    
    • Engineering projects must follow the engineering design process.  The engineering design process is a series of steps to come up with a solution to a problem.  Often this involves designing (and re-designing) a product to accomplish the task.  Take a close look at the Engineering Project Evaluation Form so you will not miss any critical steps.  A great resource is:

Wed, March 16th: DROP OFF PROJECTS to the Science Lab or share a digital project with Ms. Collins (

Thu, March 17th: 9:45-12:00 JUDGING (virtual and in-person)

Fri, March 18th: Winners will be named during morning announcements. Students will present their projects during the school day and have a chance to view other grade-level projects as well.

Mon, March 21st: All remaining projects must be removed from the Media Center.

All students in Grades 3-5 are welcome to take part in the Science & Engineering Fair, but it is not mandatory.
