Coat Drive
The DES coat drive is continuing thru December 1st, with final contributions being accepted during the Holiday Shoppe. We are currently accepting new and gently used coats of all sizes, both adult and child sizes. We have 113 coats presently, and our goal is 400. Coats are being donated to Mills Parole Elementary School in Annapolis, where the student poverty rate is approximately 96%; thank you for your generosity and support of the children in our community during this holiday season. If you have any questions, please email Jill Rosato. See the attached flyer for more information.
Special Project
We are looking for someone crafty to help us design our new volunteer aprons. The PTO has purchased 24 aprons for our volunteers to be more easily identified during events. We would love to have someone add a little DES flair to these aprons. If you have a crafty side and are interested in taking on this project, please contact us by emailing us at desgatorblast@gmail.com.
Volunteer Spotlight
The Harlem Wizards game is just around the corner on December 9th at South River High School. This is one of our major fundraisers for the year, and it’s going to be an amazing event! An event of this magnitude could not happen without many volunteers, and DES is lucky to have dads like Jere Lorenzen-Strait who are willing to make it all happen.
Jere (Papa) and his husband Andrew (Dadda) have three children. Eloisa is in 3rd grade with Mrs. LeFaive, Dulcie is in Kindergarten with Mrs. Sis, and Johannes is a future Gator in preschool. Their family loves to have campfires in the yard, dress up and go to the Renaissance Festival, and make crepes on Saturday mornings. Jere enjoys baking cookies with the kids, learning about local plants and animals, and weaving on his standing loom.
When Jere was asked why he volunteers, he said, “As a working parent, it is tricky to find time to volunteer at school. Thankfully our PTO provides lots of opportunities to support our kids, even amidst the craziness of home and work life. DES is a fantastic school community, and I want to support the good work of our school’s teachers and leadership team.”
Bus Driver Appreciation Day

We celebrated our fantastic School Bus Drivers before the Thanksgiving break! Traditionally, on the Friday before Thanksgiving week, the PTO plans a little treat for the caring bus drivers who keep our kids safe to and from school. With the support of the Edgewater Chick-Fil-A, we provided each bus driver a hot breakfast sandwich, fruit cup, water bottle, and a little gift card. We know how challenging transportation is nowadays, and we are thankful for all our drivers. We have some amazing folks, like Mr. Chester, who came out of retirement to drive one of our DES routes this year! This was just a small way to show our appreciation, be sure to say “Thank you” to our drivers whenever you have a chance!
It’s not too late to get your Fall Student Photos ordered, but don’t wait too long; the deadline is quickly approaching. Order by December 1st for delivery by December 23rd. Click here to place your order. Use the Access Code that was provided on your proof.

Mark your calendar for our Dine for DES at MOD Pizza. This event is open all day on Thursday, December 8th. MOD Pizza is located at 2341 Forest Drive, Suite P in Annapolis, at the Festival at Riva Shopping Center. This is a great excuse to take the day off cooking while earning money for the DES PTO. See the attached flyer for more information.

Volunteer Spotlight
DES is hosting a coat drive and will donate coats to Mills Parole Elementary School. New and gently used coats can be dropped off in the gift-wrapped boxes in the main office during the month of November or at the Holiday Shoppe on December 1st. If you are purchasing new coats to donate, please choose sizes Medium and Large so the kids can grow into them.
The woman behind this effort is Jillian Rosato, a parent of a kindergartner at DES. Although she is new to our community, she reached out quickly to the PTO Board with many ideas as to how DES can increase community involvement and service learning. She said, “I am very excited to lead this year’s coat drive, as I have a passion for community outreach. I love that the coat drive directly impacts underserved families right in our community. I volunteer because I care deeply about giving back to my community whenever I can, and am especially passionate about supporting the educators in my community.”
Jillian and her husband, Anthony, have three children. Haili is five, Lucca is three, and Winnie is one. As a family, they love to spend time on the water, either paddle boarding, boating, or fishing. On most days, they can be found on the sports field or dance studio watching their daughters.
Thank you, Jillian, for all of your efforts so far! Welcome to the DES family. If you have any questions, please contact Jill Rosato at rosatojillian@gmail.com.

Volunteer Spotlight
Did you know that we have a School Beautification Committee? Yes, indeed we do, and Committee members are responsible for keeping DES grounds looking sharp and festive. The County provides minimal funding for school landscaping, and that is why many of the plantings, holiday floral decorations, weeding, and mulching is done by volunteers and paid for by the PTO and through volunteer donations.
The Chairs of this Committee are Kjrsten Hersey and Meredith Martin. Kjrsten (pictured in the back row, center) and her husband Brad (back row left) have children, Gray (14), Lulu (11), and Blake (6). She loves to watch her children play sports. Kjrsten enjoys being with family and friends and volunteering alongside them in her free time! Meredith (back row, second from right) and her husband Alex (back row, far right) have two children, Caroline (11) and Wells (9). The Martins enjoy cheering their children in sports, going to the pool, and to the gym.
Both Kjrsten and Meredith love living in Davidsonville and have many friends they consider family. They seek to contribute to the school and community so that all of the children are able to have the best opportunities and experiences
Special Thank You
We would like to express our gratitude to Homestead Gardens for donating our outdoor Fall Decorations to make our school more beautiful. Homestead Gardens has a long history of supporting DES and our community. Please consider shopping with Homestead Gardens for your holiday needs.

Volunteer Spotlight
At DES, the PTO sponsors 2 Scholastic book fairs each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. During these book fairs, students can shop independently or with volunteers’ assistance during their recess times. Parents are also able to come in and shop with students at students’ lunch times. The PTO uses funds raised during the book fairs to keep the book vending machine stocked for students, provide books to the DES library, and provide books from teachers’ wish lists for their classrooms. The book fairs take a lot of volunteers and a lot of planning. This year’s Book Fair Chair is Nicole Derochers. Nicole has assisted with every in-person book fair since 2019 and describes her family as “big bookworms,” so she was excited to take on this role.
Nicole has been active in the DES community since 2019. She has 2 children; Jackson is in 3rd grade, and Kelsey will be joining the DES family next school year. Nicole has volunteered in the past with the Kindergarten Welcome Wagon, Polar Express Day, being a room parent, and the Book Fair. Her favorite part of volunteering is seeing all the kids together in person and having fun. She especially loves the excitement the students have for the Book Fair. In her spare time, Nicole enjoys reading, mostly fictional & crime novels, going out to eat with friends and family, scrapbooking, and playing cards or board games with her kids.
Student Directory
This is the final call for any changes, omissions, or additions to the student directory. Please make sure you update us with any changes you wish to show in this year’s directory. You do not have to be in the PTO to be listed in the directory, but you do have to be a member of the PTO to receive the directory. If you wish to join the PTO, you can do so at any time during the school year by clicking here. If you wish to pay via check or cash, you can turn it into your student’s teacher in an envelope marked PTO Membership (Be sure to include your family name)
Harvest for the Hungry

Volunteer Spotlight
There are many events that occur at DES that you wouldn’t think would need volunteers. School pictures are one of these events. When you send your students to school ready to say cheese, volunteers are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that these events are organized and run smoothly. The volunteers help to gather classes for their scheduled picture time while assisting teachers to ensure students are in proper order for their photos. This year’s chair for school-sponsored events, which includes Picture Day, is Christie Dowd.
Christie has been active in the DES community since 2019. She is new to chairing school-sponsored events. In the past, she has helped with the Book Fair, class pictures, field trips, teacher luncheons, teacher appreciation week, and the Kindergarten Welcome Wagon. Christie has two daughters; Lilah
is in 4th grade, and Vivian is in 2nd grade. In her free time, she enjoys baking and decorating cakes, reading books, and spending time outdoors hiking or traveling with her family.

Harvest For the Hungry-Kids Helping Kids
Help us help Anne Arundel County families as we celebrate “Food Friday” during the month of October!! DES Team of helpers will be ready to collect any food donations as we help combat hunger for local families. Kids can wear their DES Spirit Wear and bring in any nonperishable food items on any/all Fridays in October. Monetary donations are also accepted using the QR code on the flyer. $1 donated = 8 pounds of food. This is a great opportunity for our kids to see how far their kind acts can go! See the attached flyer for more information.
Volunteer Spotlight
Ann-Marie Gnall is one of our wonderful volunteers. She is the Chair for Gator Gear and does all of our designs and a lot of the PTO’s marketing. Over the summer, she also touched up the paint drawings in the children’s hall bathrooms at DES. We are lucky to have Ann-Marie and recently asked her to share a little about herself.
“I have been volunteering with DES for a little over three years. I have two awesome boys, Peter (3rd grade) and Max (1st grade) at Davidsonville Elementary. My husband, Gabe, is also a volunteer – he just doesn’t realize it with all the help he gives me when I’m volunteering. I have helped DES with graphic design (the front entrance mat, T-shirts, misc graphics support. and the gator gear), helped with the book fair in previous years, helped with the wrapping of gifts for the Holiday Shoppe, and tried to help where I could help with various other opportunities. I have also volunteered with the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, Backpacks for Love, and PMI (Project Managers International). I work full time as a Business/Program Analyst and in my spare time design shirts and fabrics, craft, and many other things (gnarllymamadesigns). I really love Davidsonville Elementary; the staff and teachers have really made a big difference in our lives.”
Chess Club
Spots are filling fast for the Fall DES Chess program. If you haven’t registered yet and would like your student to participate, make sure to get them registered before spots fill up. The program is for all grades and all levels! Meetings are held after school on most Wednesdays from 2:30 pm-3:30 pm and run from October 12-January 18, 2023. There is a fee of $198. You can register by clicking here. See the attached flyer for more information.
*Scholarships are available* Contact Mrs. Isett in our guidance office at cisett@aacps.org for scholarship information.
Fingerprinting Event
DES is happy to offer a fingerprinting event Tuesday, October 11th at DES in the main hallway. The cost is $58.25 and can be paid with cash, credit, or debit cards (no checks).
Slots are every 5 minutes, it is extremely important to be on time!
Background investigations are divided into two categories: fingerprint-supported background checks and commercial background checks. Once a fingerprint-supported background check is performed, applicants no longer need to submit the electronic background check. It’s easy, fast, only needs to be done once, and is good as long as you have students in AACPS.
Who needs to be fingerprinted? Check this link! https://www.aacps.org/Page/1869
Do I need fingerprinting? Q&A https://www.aacps.org/Page/5384
